Researchers at the University of California San Diego successfully stopped a Corvette in its tracks, without even being in the car.
Using a wireless dongle, the sort provided by insurance companies to track speed and location, they were able to stop a 2013 Corvette C6 Grand Sport by sending a text message to the dongle. They could turn on the Corvette’s windshield wipers and slow the car down at low speeds.
The dongle plugs into the car’s OBDII port. It communicates with every system within a car: the brakes, power steering, and transmission. The researchers pointed at the potential for hackers to gain even further access to a car’s inner workings.
